El WCW Tag Team Championsip fue originalmente conocido como NWA World Tag Team Championship de Mid Atlantic Championship Wrestling promovida por Jim Crockett Promotions. Tras la introducción del título en 1975, The Minnesota Wrecking Crew se convirtieron en los campeones inaugurales el 29 de Enero. El título fue renombrado a World Championship Wrestling World Tag Team Championship en 1991 cuando Ted Turner compra Jim Crockett Promotions renombrandola a World Championship Wrestling.
Aún teniendo el nombre de NWA en Mid Atlantic Championship Wrestling, la National Wrestling Alliance no reconoce su propio NWA World Tag Team Championship hasta el año 1992 cuando Terry Gordy y Steve Williams ganan un tonreo por los cuinturones. Como resultado de que Gordy & Williams se convirtieron en WCW World Tag Team Champions poco despues de proclamarse los primeros NWA World Tag team Champions oficiales, ambos títulos fueron defendidos a la vez hasta la salida de la WCW de la Alianza en Septiembre de 1993. El 17 de Enero de 2008 la NWA se deshizo del reconocimiento de todos los WCW World Tag Team Champions conectados al NWA World Tag Team Championship.
En Marzo de 2001, World Wrestling Federation compra WCW. Poco después se comienza la sotryline de Invastion que finalmente acabaría con la alianza de WCW y ECW en la trama. Durante este tiempo el título fue conocido como WCW Tag Team Championship. En Survivor Series 2001, el título fue unificado con el WWF Tag Team Championship en un combate en Jaul de Acero (Steel Cage). Los WCW Tag Team Champions, los Dudley Boyz. vencieron a los WWF Tag Team Champions, los Hardy Boyz, y fueron nombrados los últimos WCW Tag Team Champions siendo los nuevos WWF Tag Team Champions.
